A public consultation on public realm and highway improvements for the busy coastal village of Porthgain has been launched.

Increased congestion in the village, one of North Pembrokeshire’s tourist hotspots, has caused traffic management issues and has had an impact on the area.

Five preliminary design options for ‘Porthgain for All’ have been developed for public consultation  following workshops with a local working group, Pobol Porthgain, and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority (PCNPA).

Welsh Government’s Brilliant Basics Fund has awarded £248,000 to Pembrokeshire County Council to undertake the two-year scheme, in conjunction with Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority and Pobol Porthgain. A further £62,000 in match funding has also been identified.

Local Member and Cabinet Member for Corporate Improvement and Communities Cllr Neil Prior said: “This is the next step into what has been a three-year process that has sought to actively engage and consult with the local residents, visitors and businesses within Porthgain.

“This is not a “change for changes sake" exercise, but a genuine attempt and opportunity to make some small-scale improvements, without altering the character of the village, that will help alleviate some of the pressures that come with being such a busy and popular tourist destination.”

The Porthgain for All survey aims to gather public feedback on the initial public realm and highway intervention options aiming to tackle congestion, parking, traffic management and visitor travel via sustainable options.

We would welcome your comments on the options and information presented, including on themes relating to layout options, parking, traffic flow, landscaping, signage and transport options.

Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services Cllr Rhys Sinnett added: “This survey and the proposed options have been put together following various workshops consisting of local residents and businesses of Porthgain.

“We invite all who live, work and visit the village to take part in the survey in order to help shape the future of Porthgain whilst retaining its unique qualities and charm.”

Visit the Council’s Have your Say page to let us know what you think of the proposals before 5pm, March 8th.
