Bluestone National Park Resort has been presented with The King’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development.
The award is the UK’s highest business honour and recognises Bluestone as the first holiday resort in the country to be celebrated for its work in sustainable development.
The award was presented by His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Dyfed, Miss Sara Edwards, at Bluestone’s Serendome (all weather adventure play area) where she met Founder and CEO William McNamara, Director of Sustainability Marten Lewis, Bluestone employees and invited guests.
Pembrokeshire County Council Chairman, Cllr Maureen Bowen, welcomed the Lord Lieutenant to the event.
Her visit also offered the chance to learn more about Bluestone’s long-term commitment to sustainability and its approach to caring for the environment, local communities and the wider region.
Bluestone has received the award after a detailed review of its environmental and community work. This included major progress in reducing carbon emissions, achieving a fossil fuel–free operation on all purchased energy – the first holiday park in the UK do so – embracing circular economy practices, supporting the local community, and protecting and enhancing local nature and wildlife. These efforts are supported by a strong internal culture where sustainability is a shared responsibility across the entire organisation and 30% of the business is staff owned.
The Lord Lieutenant said: “It was a pleasure to present Bluestone with The King’s Award for Enterprise and to see the great work they do. The team’s passion for sustainability and their commitment to protecting the local area in Pembrokeshire shone through during my visit. Bluestone’s work is having a positive and lasting impact, and they should be extremely proud of everything they have achieved.”
With sustainable travel increasingly important to both visitors and destinations, the tourism industry is under growing pressure to protect the environments and communities it depends on.
As Director of Sustainability, Marten Lewis has played a central role in shaping and delivering Bluestone’s sustainability strategy, leading the resort’s “operational blueprint” focused on environmental protection, local economic support and community partnerships.
He has also represented Bluestone nationally, most recently being personally congratulated by King Charles III at a royal reception for King’s Award recipients.
Reflecting on the award, Director of Sustainability Marten Lewis added: “Sustainability is not an add‑on at Bluestone. It’s the foundation of how we operate. This award recognises years of work by passionate people across the resort, all committed to creating a positive impact for our environment, our guests and our communities. It’s an honour for all of us, and a powerful motivator to keep pushing forward.”
CEO William McNamara added: “As travel and tourism continue to evolve, companies like Bluestone have a growing responsibility to operate in ways that protect the places people come to enjoy.
“Receiving this award is a hugely exciting moment for everyone here. Our commitment to protecting nature, supporting local communities and driving sustainable tourism has been at the heart of our work for many years. To have these efforts recognised at the highest national level is something our whole team is incredibly proud of.”
The King’s Award for Enterprise programme was formerly known as The Queen’s Awards before being renamed to reflect His Majesty The King’s ongoing commitment to recognising outstanding UK businesses. It remains the country’s highest business accolade and has honoured more than 8,000 companies since it began in 1965.
