Checking black bags - here’s why it matters

If you’re heading to a Waste & Recycling Centre, don’t be surprised if your black bags get a quick check.
Why? Because more than 48% of what’s being thrown away could actually be recycled or reused - and some items (like batteries/vapes and gas canisters) are a serious fire hazard in general waste.
These checks help keep staff safe, cut costs, and make sure valuable materials aren’t wasted.
The good news: it’s easier than ever to recycle. Many items can go in your kerbside collection, and all centres now have extra options like hard plastic skips.
Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services Cllr Rhys Sinnett said: “Pembrokeshire has some of the highest recycling rates in Wales and we want to keep it that way
“These increased checks are not about causing an inconvenience to centre users, it is to ensure that incorrectly disposed of items do not put the safety of WRC staff at risk. These items also cost tax payers more to dispose of when not dealt with correctly.”
We’re finding some surprising items in black bags - including an oven, a car battery and gas cylinders. If its bulky, electrical or hazardous, it doesn’t belong in your black bag! Check before you throw.
Quick tip:
Before you visit, take a minute to sort your waste - it’ll save you time on site and help keep Pembrokeshire recycling rates high.
And remember: never put batteries/vapes in your black bags — they’re a serious fire risk.
