A major boost for accessibility and inclusion has arrived in the heart of Pembrokeshire, with the opening of a fully equipped Changing Places Toilet facility at the new Haverfordwest Transport Interchange.
The specialist facility represents a commitment to ensuring that everyone, regardless of their needs, can travel with greater independence, confidence, and dignity.
Features include a height-adjustable changing bench, ceiling hoist, privacy screen and enough room for a wheelchair user and carers, offering a level of accessibility far beyond that of a standard accessible toilet.
The new provision forms part of the Council’s ambition to ensure that everyone can travel with confidence and enjoy greater independence when accessing work, education, services and leisure opportunities.
Councillor Tessa Hodgson, Leader of Pembrokeshire County Council, said: "We are incredibly proud that the new Haverfordwest Transport Interchange includes a high-quality Changing Places Toilet facility. This is much more than a toilet; it is a vital facility that opens opportunities for people and families who may otherwise face significant barriers when travelling.
"Accessibility and inclusion have been central to this development, and this facility reflects our commitment to ensuring that everyone can benefit from and enjoy this fantastic new transport hub. It is another example of how we are working to make Pembrokeshire a welcoming county for all."
Councillor Alistair Cameron, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, added: "The opening of this Changing Places Toilet facility is a real milestone and something we should celebrate. For many people with complex disabilities and their families, access to suitable facilities can make the difference between being able to travel and participate in community life or staying at home.
"By investing in facilities such as these, we are helping to create a more inclusive Pembrokeshire where everyone has the opportunity to travel, explore and enjoy everything our county has to offer with confidence, comfort and dignity."
The facility has already been welcomed by local families who recognise the positive difference it will make.
Clare Williams, Senior Traffic & Road Safety Engineer, said: “The introduction of a Changing Places facility at the Haverfordwest Interchange is a significant step forward for accessibility and inclusion in the town. More than just a facility, it provides the dignity, independence and opportunities that many people take for granted, enabling disabled people and their families to travel with confidence, access services and enjoy everything Haverfordwest has to offer.”
The Haverfordwest Transport Interchange represents a significant investment in the future of public transport in Pembrokeshire, improving connectivity while ensuring accessibility remains at the heart of the visitor experience. The new Changing Places facility will help more people than ever enjoy the freedom and confidence to travel throughout the county.
