Pembrokeshire County Council staff praised for overnight flood response

Prolonged heavy rain, combined with significant surface water, run-off from saturated fields, debris from land run off and very high tides, placed immense pressure on the storm water systems from Tuesday evening, November 4 into the early morning of Wednesday November 5.

Despite regular maintenance and seasonal clearing of drains and gullies, the sheer volume of debris, mud, and stones washed down during the flooding overwhelmed their ability to cope.

Council teams worked tirelessly overnight and into the early hours, responding to numerous flooding incidents, maintaining highway safety, closing roads where necessary, clearing debris, and supporting emergency service colleagues.

Cllr Rhys Sinnett, Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, said: “I want to pay tribute to all our staff, partner agencies, and emergency services for their exceptional efforts in extremely challenging conditions yesterday and overnight.

“Despite our ongoing efforts to maintain and clear drainage systems, the combination of relentless rainfall, high tides, and field run-off created conditions that simply exceeded the capacity of our infrastructure to manage. The volume of mud, stones, and other debris overwhelmed many gullies and drains.

“While conditions are expected to improve throughout today, we urge residents to remain vigilant, observe road closure signs, and avoid driving through flood water.”
