Pembrokeshire Learning Centre brings Roald Dahl’s stories to life

A day of drama workshops day gave Pembrokeshire Learning Centre (PLC) pupils the opportunity to step beyond the pages of a book and immerse themselves in two of Dahl’s best-loved stories.
Learners from Puffins, the PLC’s primary provision, entered the wonderfully imaginative world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, while learners from Haven (LRC) explored the characters, themes and story of Matilda, through drama, storytelling, movement and creative activities.
From the outset, pupils embraced the experience enthusiastically. Physical and vocal warm-ups were followed by drama games, storytelling and character work, with props and music helping to bring the stories to life. Pupils recreated key moments from the books and had great fun experimenting with Dahl’s famously playful and imaginative use of language.
The workshops were designed to make literacy active, accessible and enjoyable, giving pupils opportunities to develop vocabulary and understanding while strengthening speaking, listening, communication and teamwork. Pupils were also introduced to characterisation and key expressive arts vocabulary, building confidence and creativity along the way.
Sian Williams, Headteacher of Pembrokeshire Learning Centre, said: “It was fantastic to see our pupils so engaged and enthusiastic. For some of our learners, developing confidence with reading and literacy can be challenging, so finding creative ways to make stories meaningful and accessible is incredibly important.
“Experiences like this show our pupils that literacy is much more than words on a page. It can be about performing, imagining, communicating and having fun. Our pupils threw themselves into the day, and we were incredibly proud of them.
“The event forms part of the PLC’s wider commitment to developing literacy and a love of reading, while ensuring pupils have access to engaging learning experiences that help them build confidence, develop new skills and experience success.
“The day was also a celebration of the creativity and enthusiasm of pupils across the PLC, demonstrating how learning can flourish when young people are given opportunities to experience the curriculum in different and exciting ways.”
