Summer holidays over halfway but still time to Join the Summer Reading Challenge!
Dros hanner ffordd drwy wyliau'r haf ond mae amser o hyd i ymuno â Sialens Ddarllen yr Haf!
Families across Pembrokeshire are being reminded that there's still plenty of time for children to take part in this year's Summer Reading Challenge – Read to the Beat.
With the summer holidays just past the halfway point, libraries across the county are encouraging children of all ages to sign up and enjoy six books before they return to school.
Reading over the summer holiday plays a vital role in helping children maintain the progress they've made during the school year. Research shows that children who continue reading throughout the summer are more likely to retain their reading skills, expand their vocabulary and return to the classroom feeling confident and ready to learn. Best of all, reading for pleasure helps to build imagination, creativity and a lifelong love of books.
The Summer Reading Challenge is completely free to join through their local library. Participants collect rewards along the way before receiving a medal and certificate when they complete the challenge.
This year is particularly special as 2026 is the National Year of Reading, and Pembrokeshire Libraries are celebrating with an exciting range of prizes, provided by Welsh Government and Books Council of Wales, for children who complete the challenge by reading six books.
Children who finish the Summer Reading Challenge will be entered into prize draws to win some exciting prizes including a family festival ticket and local cinema and theatre tickets.
Pembrokeshire County Council Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services Cllr Rhys Sinnet said: “It's fantastic to see so many children already taking part, but it's certainly not too late to join. The Summer Reading Challenge is a brilliant way to keep children reading during the holidays while having fun at the same time. Every book counts, and our libraries are full of wonderful stories waiting to be discovered. With some fantastic prizes on offer this year as part of the National Year of Reading, there's never been a better time to sign up."
