Prendergast CP School in Haverfordwest has secured a prestigious award underlining the school’s commitment to support pupils and families from the Armed Services.

Prendergast CP School has been granted Gold Armed Forces Friendly School Cymru status, the highest accolade possible.

Louise John, Prendergast CP School Headteacher, said staff were committed to ensuring “Service pupils feel welcomed, understood and able to thrive.”

Ms John added: “We are committed to recognising and supporting the unique experiences of pupils from Service families.

“We applied for Gold Armed Forces Friendly School Cymru status with Supporting Service Children in Education Cymru (SSCE Cymru) to reflect the sustained work we have undertaken to embed understanding of Service life across our school.

“We have developed a whole-school approach that prioritises early identification, strong communication with families, and pastoral support.

“Achieving Gold Status will recognise the commitment of our staff and the inclusive practices already in place, while reinforcing our ongoing dedication to supporting Service children’s wellbeing, belonging, and educational success.”

To achieve Gold Armed Forces Friendly School Cymru status, the school has had to show evidence of good practice in supporting Service children, creating a positive environment for Service children to share their experiences and encourage engagement with the Armed Forces community.

The school had previously gained the Bronze and Silver awards prior to securing the Gold.

Cllr Simon Hancock, Pembrokeshire County Council’s Member Champion for Armed Forces, said: “I would like to add my congratulations to Prendergast School in achieving the coveted Gold Armed Forces Friendly School Cymru status.

“As I have seen in my visits, the school really engages with the Armed Forces community and creates a positive and supportive environment for Service children.”

Cllr Guy Woodham, the Cabinet Member for Education and the Welsh Language added: “This is fantastic recognition of the on-going great work being done at Prendergast School to support pupils and families from the Armed Services and is a great example of good practice in how to undertake this important support. Well done to everyone involved.”
