Reg moved to tears by award for support of Armed Services children

Mr White, a Team Leader at the school, was nominated by SSCE Cymru (Supporting Service Children in Education Wales) and awarded a Bronze Award in the Unsung Hero category of the 2026 Pearson National Teaching Awards.

Mr White has played a key role in developing support for service children, helping to create opportunities that build confidence, resilience and a sense of belonging among pupils from military families.

His award recognises the lasting impact he has made on young people, their families and the wider community, making him a worthy recipient of the Unsung Hero honour.

Keeping the event secret from him until the last moment, members of the school's Forces Life Club welcomed Mr White with applause and cheers as he arrived for an afternoon tea celebration.

The event brought together pupils, community partners, local primary schools and representatives from organisations that support Armed Forces families.

Joanna Wolfe, Participation Lead Officer at SSCE Cymru, said: “Through his commitment to supporting Armed Forces-connected learners, Reg has made a lasting impact at Haverfordwest High VC School and across Wales.

“We are grateful for his leadership, partnership and continued support of young people. To us, he is a true Unsung Hero.”

During the event, Mr White was presented with his Bronze Award pin badge, certificate and signed letter from Sir Michael Morpurgo. The celebration also coincided with activities marking Armed Forces Day.

Mr White said: "I was embarrassed, humbled and very proud to be nominated for this award.

“Everyone involved with Military Children in Pembrokeshire works hard to improve their lives and opportunities.

“I am just one of a very large team and accept the award on behalf of all of our combined efforts.

“I would also like to thank Miranda Corcoran, Service Children’s Mentor at Haverfordwest High VC School and the Military Children of HHVCS for such a wonderful celebration. It literally moved me to tears."

The level of support Mr White has provided young people was underlined by the comments of Lucie Higson, a Year 11 pupil who visited during exam leave for the event,

Lucie said: “For me, this isn’t just a club, it’s a family. We have all been through unique experiences and this club brings us together thanks to people like you. It has helped me be confident in what I do.”

Taylor Pemberthy, a School Council Service Pupil Ambassador said: “Being surrounded by people who share similar challenges and understand one another makes a real difference and Mr White’s dedication and support have helped make the club such a positive and important part of our lives.”

Pembrokeshire County Council’s Armed Forces Champion, Cllr Simon Hancock, also praised Mr White’s contribution.

Cllr Hancock said: “Reg is an exceptional advocate for military children, working tirelessly to ensure they are supported and represented. His dedication, passion and commitment make a real difference to the lives of Armed Forces families, and it is wonderful to see his efforts recognised in this way.”

Miranda Corcoran, Service Children’s Mentor at Haverfordwest High VC School and its cluster primary schools, added: “Reg’s award is thoroughly deserved. As a former military child, veteran and parent of military children, he has a unique understanding of the challenges faced by Armed Forces families. His dedication has helped create a strong sense of belonging within the Forces Life Club and has made a lasting difference to the lives of our pupils. He has also been a tremendous support to me since I started in my role earlier this year. He truly is an unsung hero.”

The event also celebrated the achievements of the school’s Service Pupil Ambassadors, who presented a cheque for £1,500 to Barry John MBE of the VC Gallery following a series of successful fundraising activities.
