Local volunteers who have gone the extra mile to welcome the National Eisteddfod to the area will be thanked during a special ceremony on the first day of the festival.

The first session at Pentre’r Garreg Las will be an opportunity to publicly recognise volunteers who worked tirelessly for their local fundraising committees.

Pembrokeshire County Council looks forward to welcoming visitors to Pentre’r Garreg Las, a space to celebrate the people, communities, and culture of the wider Eisteddfod region across the three counties, showcasing stories and individuals who have made a special contribution to the Eisteddfod's success.

Local committees across the Eisteddfod y Garreg Las region have raised hundreds of thousands of pounds over recent years to ensure the festival could be welcomed to the area.

John Davies, Chairman of the Garreg Las National Eisteddfod Executive Committee, says the fundraising campaign has been historic.

He said: "More than £528,000 has been raised so far, the largest amount ever raised by a local fund for a National Eisteddfod. That is a testament to the generosity of the local people and to the tireless work of the local committees, who have given so much of their time and energy over the past few years."

The programme at Pentre'r Garreg Las will begin with a special ceremony, 'Celebrating our Champions', where individuals from across the county will be honoured for their outstanding contribution to the fundraising campaign.

Every local committee is invited to nominate an individual who has made an exceptional contribution, whether by organising events, garnering community support, or giving countless hours of voluntary work, and they will be invited onto the stage to receive recognition in front of Eisteddfod visitors.

Chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council, Cllr Delme Harries, said: "Eisteddfod y Garreg Las has been a true community effort, and it gives us great pleasure to start the week by thanking those who have given their time, energy, and commitment to make it all possible.

“Too often, volunteers work tirelessly behind the scenes, and this ceremony is an opportunity to acknowledge their special contribution and to say thank you publicly on behalf of our communities.”

It is hoped that their work will leave a local legacy, and groups will continue to engage and promote community spirt after the Eisteddfod.

'Celebrating our Champions' will open the Garreg Las Village programme at 10am on Saturday, 1 August, setting the tone for a week of celebrating the contribution of local people and communities – the people who have made the Garreg Las Eisteddfod possible.
